GeoHex Project Entering Final Stages

Tue, 21 March, 2023

Having begun in 2019, the Horizon2020-funded GeoHex project is now drawing to a close after more than three years of work, with the consortium now working on the final results and tests.

The project consortium includes 13 partners from across Europe and the Philippines, drawing on their technology transfer expertise to optimise the heat exchangers used for geothermal energy production.

This optimisation will reduce both the initial and ongoing operating costs and improve the efficiency of geothermal plants.

The inherently harsh environments associated with geothermal energy means that components are under a constant threat of corrosion and scaling, which results in high capital, maintenance and operational costs. The heat exchangers bear the brunt of these conditions, whether direct or organic rankine cycle, and the GeoHex project aims to deliver improved anti-scaling and anti-corrosion properties as well as improved heat transfer performance. This will lead to more efficient and cost-effective systems and encourage the increased use of geothermal power as a means of stabilising grid fluctuations and delivering a reliable, renewable energy resource.

The GEOHEX project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 851917
