GeoHex: Innovative Geothermal Technology for The Philippines

Fri, 13 December, 2019

Project GeoHex, funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 851917), is the first RTD project for the Philippines that highlights transcontinental technology transfer for development of advanced materials for cost-efficient and enhanced heat exchanger performance in geothermal applications.

Quantum Leap, a procurement and service company in the power sector from the Philippines and in conjunction with the Government of the Philippines, is working with experts from leading research institutes across UK and Europe to share  cutting-edge technology towards building a sustainable renewable energy system. The technology transfer, as part of GEOHEX project, aims to develop heat exchanger (HX) materials addressing both the improvements in the anti-scaling and anti-corrosion properties, as well as, the heat transfer performance of the HX material leading to more efficient and cost-effective systems. The reduced cost of geothermal plant based on GeoHex enabled HX, is proposed to significantly reduce the levelised cost of energy (LCOE), which will accelerate the growth of geothermal energy.

“The Philippines is one of the top producers of geothermal power and our company is the central  to research and development activities for geothermal projects in the Philippines”, says John Defensor, President of Quantum Leap. “The novel materials developed as part of the GeoHex project promises solutions to current corrosion and scaling issues with heat exchangers in our geothermal power plants”.

“We have chosen them to promote the novel materials for HXs, and associated product and services developed in the project”, says the European partners in the consortium. “GeoHex will create a new market opportunity outside Europe, in the Philippines which is the 2nd largest geothermal energy producer in the world,  with a capacity of 1.8 GW.”
